Are you sensitive to Chlorine treated swimming pools?
Chlorine in a swimming pool is somewhat stronger than that in your home water supply so any reaction will show fairly quickly, most people will be familiar with red itchy and sore eyes from a reaction with Chlorine in pool water and take it for granted, other people may notice their skin becoming red or sore and itchy also, but if you are also a skin sufferer, have Eczema, Psoriasis etc; then using a Chlorinated pool can be devastating to your condition
.
Chlorine vaporises at low temperatures and that is why a swimming pool has such an unpleasant and strong smell, quit often drinking water has a bad chlorine taste (and smell) and can affect beverages badly. Try filling a glass with water direct from the tap and immediately sniff the contents, much in the same manner as wine tasters do, you may be surprised!
Obviously using a Chlorinated pool can be avoided by not going there any more and searching out a pool that uses salt or even better Ionisation as an alternative to giving up swimming altogether.
But what about Chlorine by stealth?
Household water is routinely dosed with the deadly toxin Chlorine as a way of killing off a range of possible diseases in water by your water supply company, and although the doses are relatively low compared to a swimming pool you are never the less exposed to it on a continual basis, every time that you wash or have a bath, or a shower you are exposing your self to Chlorine, continuously aggravating delicate skin conditions
Free Residual Chlorine used to wash with, used in the bath or shower reduces the water holding capacity of Stratum Corneum of people with atomic skin.
Although it is very hard to quantify the sensitivity of an individual persons skin it is apparent that this “drying off” effect is the opposite to what is required, where skin needs to be moisturised, and preferably by the most natural means. So it could well be Chlorine that is contributing to a particular condition, even if water is termed as soft it could still have enough Calcium and Magnesium salts in it to add to the effects of the Chlorine to create a “cocktail” to exacerbate inflammations.
Since the early 1980’s scientists have known that the presence of free residual Chlorine in water is a primary cause of the development of Atherosclerosis, it causes fats to form as cholesterol deposits known as plaque and it is plaque that clogs arteries resulting in heart attacks and strokes.
Further scientific studies show that Chlorine destroys vitamin E an essential antioxidant, the lack of this vitamin impedes heart muscle function, weakens capillary walls and constricts blood vessels, thereby elevating blood pressure and increasing the risk of heart disease, there are also many studies that link Chlorine with cancer and heart failure.
It is fair to say until the water authorities are willing to use safer methods to keep disease out or our water pipes it will become the responsibility of the concerned householder to remove Chlorine from drinking water at the point of use- the kitchen tap, through filtration or other safe methods, there may also be a case for removing is prior to bathing or showering in it. Activated Carbon filters can be used to remove Chlorine and its by-products, if you choose to use such a filter it is essential to follow the manufacturers instruction.
Residual Chlorine in Bath Water Might Affect Atopic Dermatitis.
What follows is a part of a report from:
The Department of Dermatology Faculty of Medicine at the Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University in Japan.
“Some Patients with Atopic Dermatitis (AD) develop dry skin or exacerbated cutaneous inflammation with frequent swimming in public pools or after bathing. We examined the effects of residual chlorine in bathing water on the function of the Stratum Corneum in patients with Atopic Dermatitis and determined the lowest level of Chlorine concentration showing an effect. In addition we investigated the relationship between the Free Residual Chlorine concentration in bathing water and the water holding capacity of the Stratum Corneum in patients with Atopic dermatitis.
The results of tests show that Free Residual Chlorine exposure with Atopic Dermatitis may play a role in the development or exacerbation of Atopic dermatitis”
But this is not to suggest that the same results are not also affected by exposure to Free Residual Chlorine in their household water supply for other sufferers of dry skin conditions, Eczema and Psoriasis etc, even those who do not outwardly show problems may suffer from dry skin and just think that’s the way they naturally are.
There is also evidence that having an electric kettle that use exposed elements can cause irritation of the skin by way of nickel contaminating the water that is drunk, although this is not normally recognised as a major problem to people who do not suffer from skin problems, it can be another source of aggravation for others, Chlorine can also react with Nickel based white gold and can cause a red rash to appear on the skin, there are however many other jewellery type items that contain nickel that can aggravate sensitive skin, even buckles on belts and buttons on jeans etc; so care should be taken in this area and of course body piercing should be avoided unless you are totally sure of the metal content.
